A campfire is an essential element of any outdoor adventure, providing warmth, light, and a focal point for camaraderie. However, building a campfire requires careful planning, attention to safety, and proper equipment. This article outlines the step-by-step process of constructing a perfect campfire while incorporating safety tips and necessary accessories to ensure a memorable and secure outdoor experience.
Building a campfire is a time-honored tradition that brings people together in the great outdoors. Always prioritize safety to prevent accidents. Here we outline the steps to construct a perfect campfire while incorporating safety precautions and sharing our thoughts on the necessary accessories to have while camping.
Before starting a campfire, it is imperative to follow local regulations and obtain any necessary permits. Most campsites have a designated fire ring for building your campfire. Should you be boondocking or at a campsite which does not have a designated place, choose a suitable location that is away from flammable materials, overhanging branches, and structures. Gather your essential equipment, including fire-building supplies, safety gear, and cooking tools.
When building a campfire make sure you clear the area of any debris or vegetation. If your campsite does not have a fire ring, create a fire pit by digging a shallow hole and surrounding it with rocks. We like to use fire rings when building our fires. You can find our favorite fire rings using these links: https://amzn.to/3YFYVQN and https://amzn.to/3OFB0N0 . Collect firewood, including tinder, kindling, and fuelwood, in various sizes. Texas state parks prohibit the collection of firewood, so make sure you know the rules where you are camping. To ensure proper airflow, arrange firewood in a teepee or log cabin structure. Jeff always starts our fires using the teepee structure he learned as a boy in Boy Scouts with these fire starters https://amzn.to/3QLeepI. The picture with this article shows the teepee structure. After the fire starts to burn hot, add more firewood periodically to keep it going.
Campfires are fun, but they are also dangerous. Make sure you maintain a safe distance from the fire to prevent burns. Never leave the campfire unattended and appoint someone responsible for always watching the fire. Keep something nearby to extinguish the fire in the event of an emergency. We keep both a bucket full of water and a fire extinguisher near our campfire.
There are several fire tools we always use and recommend you have them available when enjoying your fire. The first is a fire poker. It allows you to move logs or coals around in the firepit without getting too close to the flames. The second is fire tongs. Sometimes logs just won’t cooperate with the fire poker. The tongs make it easier to pick up a burning log and place it where it needs to go. And third is a shovel. We use our shovel to scoop out ashes and to scoop up hot coals to place on our Dutch oven when making our Campfire Apple Cinnamon Delight.

When you are finished enjoying the fire, make sure to extinguish the fire before leaving. The best way to extinguish it is by dousing it with water and stirring the ashes. Any amount of smoke rising from the doused fire after a few minutes indicates the fire is not completely extinguished. Douse and stir it again until there is no more smoke.
Building a perfect campfire involves careful planning, adherence to safety guidelines, and the right tools. Our hope is that by following the steps outlined in this post, you can enjoy the beauty of a campfire while ensuring your safety. Remember that responsible campfire practices contribute to a positive outdoor experience for everyone involved.
